New Music: Diskokaine: "Riminini (Vocal Mix)" [MP3/Stream]
Italo disco gives way to glitzier, kookier dancefloor sounds from the late 1980s and 90s on the latest from Diskokaine, aka Vienna-based DJ/producer Wolfram "marfloW" Eckert. It was Diskokaine's eponymous label that first released Sally Shapiro's early singles, followed by the original Disco Romance full-length, and Eckert in his Marflow guise gave "I'll Be By Your Side" one of its first remixes. A Chicago house TR-707 drum machine provides the heartbeat of new Diskokaine single "Riminini", while a synth-organ riff like the one made famous in Robin S.'s 1993 hit "Show Me Love" (not to be confused with Robyn's 1997 single of the same name) percolates throughout. Glitchy, chopped-up vocals ride over the top, along with squigglier synth leads and piano, leading the track someplace closer to 90s UK piano rave. Together with its so-bad-it's-good cover art, the single demonstrates that the synthesized dance-pop sounds of past decades hold up a helluva a lot better over time than, say, your grandma's fake boobs.
