New Music: High Places: "Head Spins (Allez-Allez Remix)" [MP3/Stream]

Allez-Allez are probably already making heads nod to their electro-house remix of Brooklyn pair High Places "Head Spins". London DJ duo Sam Willis and Steve Nolan take this track from High Places' 2007 self-titled EP from a floor where people sit to a floor where people, like, dance. Mary Pearson, who is one-half of High Places along with Rob Barber (she's also the sister of a former Pitchfork employee) is still singing: "I was floored." It's not quite that astonishing-- you almost certainly won't faint to the ground in wonderment-- but Allez-Allez's "Head Spins" remix really is an excellent reworking of (arguably) the catchiest song by one of the year's most promising young bands. The original has a beat, too, but it's a floaty, organic thump-- Martin Denny remixed by Ricardo Villalobos re-edited underwater by Arthur Russell. Allez-Allez give "Head Spins" house's standard 4x4 heartbeat, which combines with dark swooping synths to give the song a propulsive core. But the DJs also keep plenty of High Place's rickety lo-fi psychedelia, along with Pearson's guileless vocal about new love. And they've extended the track's blissful reverie from roughly two minutes to slightly more than five. Good news for people who don't love sore clicking fingers.
