New Music: Liars: "Disgusting" [Stream]
The reaction to Liars' left-turn sophomore LP, They Were Wrong So We Drowned, was notoriously intense. "Eww!" the most heated detractors might as well have been saying of the record's cacophonous atmospherics. "Turn that shit off!" After the haunted ethereality of 2006's Drum's Not Dead, and the surprisingly straightforward punk and hard rock of last year's Liars, "Disgusting" isn't likely to provoke so much disgust. One of a handful of apparently new songs/sketches posted to the now-Los Angeles-based experimental rockers' MySpace (although the snail theme of "And When Did You Get Here, Snail?" dates back to Drum's Not Dead), "Disgusting" sounds sort of like a fractured, improvisatory re-imagining of Spoon's recent Pixies-soul soundclash. An insistent bass line like a more ominous take on Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him" bangs out from below loose percussion and shrill post-punk guitars. "Why can't they turn on the lights?" Angus Andrew sings, with a back-of-throat enunciation that's probably what made me think of Spoon to begin with. "It's so disgusting," he screams. I hock a loogie.
