On Repeat: Air France: "Beach Party" [MP3]

Sure to trip up the easily confused, Air France have nothing to do with Air (French band). They're actually from Sweden. And they don't sound much like Air, even though this track (which samples Lisa Stansfield's "All Around The World") is breezy, a bit retro, and owes something to the sepia-toned melancholy happiness of AM radio.

The song is meant to soundtrack that thing it's named for, with an opening that fades up like you're stepping out of the sea with saltwater in your ears to see all your pals chatting away around a boombox and a bonfire at dusk. Then there's a tricky little neo-Cuban rhythm tapped out on dinky electronics and a for-real conga drum, and somebody shakes a sand-filled egg like they're whipping up what another generation would call a boat drink. By the end, I swear I hear fireworks streaking over the water and we're talking about the greatest night, like, ever.
