New Music: Three 6 Mafia [ft. Chamillionaire]: "Doe Boy Fresh" [Stream]
DJ Paul has now added "Academy Award winners" to the list of things that he yells at the beginnings of songs, but other than that, not much has changed since the Hypnotize Minds camp took their Oscar (Best Original Song for "It's Hard Out There for a Pimp", from Hustle and Flow) home to Memphis. Paul's still growling harsh, guttural misogyny, and Juicy J's still offsetting it beautifully with his oddly repetitive choppy bounce-flow. Since he left the group last year, Crunchy Black's offbeat wheeze is missed, but it's replaced here with guest Chamillionaire's slippery singsong, a sound so smooth and pretty it just makes everything else feel harder and more depressing.
And that brings us to
that slow, swollen beat, exactly the sort of drizzly thump these guys
have been perfecting for over a decade now. There's a reason why Three
6 won that Oscar, and it wasn't just so Jon Stewart could tell a couple
of jokes about it. They're masters at that thick, intuitive boom.
