Video: Nas: "Can't Forget About You"
From the muted lighting to the black-and-white title card to the art deco sets and undone bow-ties, Nas' video for "Can't Forget About You" was designed to evoke a mid-century glamor to match its sample of Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable". Even guest singer Chrisette Michele's voice seems ripped from that era. It's funny then, that what Nas is asking us to remember are almost all televised pop culture events: Michael Jackson does the Moonwalk, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince win the first hip-hop Grammy, Michael Jordan retires, Mr. T joins the WWF. But when most firsts now are in terms of sales and dollar amounts (Russell Simmons to become the first hip-hop millionaire, etc), maybe there's something great in remembering actual culturally important firsts (Nat King Cole was the first African-American to have his own network TV show).
