New Music: Juelz Santana/Ghislain Poirier: “Dipset (Santana's Town) (Ghislain Poirier Remix)”

Ghislain Poirier unearths a Juelz Santana track from 2003 (15 generations, in internet time) for this remix from his recent Bounce le Remix Vol. 2 mixtape. It's a simultaneously appropriate and frustrating remix, as blunt as Cam'ron's hook but not as thrilling as the original instrumental track. Poirier replaces those frantic strings with shortly clipped, stately horns, turning a nightmare into a party, a minor key into a major. The repetition obscures some of Santana's more impressive wordplay, so Cam'ron's trenchantly philosophical "Juelz Dip Dip/ Santana Set Set" leaves the last impression.

Poirier's remix finds its purpose, however, in its two Girl Talk moments (the smooth soul sample that briefly takes over around the 1:15 mark and the scream at the end): while it may not totally function on its own, it could work wonders in a DJ mix. It's a perfectly good transition with nothing to fade into.
