On Repeat: Dan Deacon: "The Crystal Cat" [MP3]
Baltimore's Dan Deacon is possibly one of thee strangest motherfuckers in all the land of Indiedom. Though he's a classically trained composer, he's better known for his batshit live shows which are bizarre enough to leave most attendees completely bewildered, his Devo-like persona sometimes overshadowing his talent altogether. And since Deacon tours perpetually, that's where most of his first impressions are made. And, I mean, look at the dude:
"The Crystal Cat", taken from his forthcoming (and, from what we've gathered in our first few listens, ridiculously good) album Spiderman of the Rings, is a waaaay better introduction to Deacon's stuff: A supercharged new wave pop song with all the prerequisites of the greatest late-00's indie, its Animal Collective-esque pop experimentation, budget electronics, and vocodered vocals add up to a melody so goddamn manic and infectious, it's basically all we want to hear today.
