New Music: Herbert : "Nicotine" [Stream]
Assembled from Matthew Herbert's soundtrack work over the last
decade, his upcoming album Score features 17 tracks from seven films and one dance piece.
"Nicotine" is the oldest, recorded in 1996 for a short film
of the same name. According to Herbert, "The film is about a guy who
wants a post-coital cigarette, so he goes out to get one and ends up
being raped." We hear you-- it's like eight bucks a pack around here!
"Nicotine" isn't the world's most exciting track-- it's part of a score, after all-- so it stays a little too even. Its jazzy drum loops and percussive touches (which sound sort of like bubbles rising and popping in midair) stay light and effervescent, which makes us really want to see the short film-- if only to see how such an airy little song could fit into a rape scene.
