New Music: Arctic Monkeys: "Brianstorm" [Stream]

The NME called this the Arctic Monkeys' "comeback single," and though they probably mean "sophomore" or "new," it does remind us of the uphill battle that bands (especially British bands) face when they're releasing their second album. But no one is tired of the Arctic Monkeys yet, except for people who were tired of them from the start. The track debuted on the BBC's Zane Lowe show, and then "debuted" another two times during the two-hour broadcast. No backlash in sight.

The Arctic Monkeys' latest single is surprisingly aggressive and demanding. It also seemed to blend in well with show opener Klaxons-- the short track's drums and bass are speed metal-fast, much too quick to dance to. There's no time to breathe during its two-and-a-half minutes anyway. Each time the song moves to a slightly tamer-- though more jittery-- verse, it swings back to surf guitar and intense, double-speed drumming.
