New Music: Matthew Dear: "Deserter" [Stream]

"Deserter" is the first single from Matthew Dear's first full-length album in four years, but while his past tracks have come primed for the dancefloor, this one's more about mood than movement. The single-- which, like the others, will be issued by his acclaimed Ghostly International label-- starts with an uncharacteristically mild beat, a milky synth with a music box prettiness to it, and Dear's monotone voice repeating a few existential lyrics: "I am really all that I've been looking for/ ...It really doesn't matter." This refrain drowns beneath unintelligible whispers and clinks, but the calmness of his voice means he's either satisfied or resigned.
