New Music: Voxtrot: "Kid Gloves" [MP3]
Voxtrot were heroes on the first day of SXSW. The set from these Austin natives (and thus, hometown champs) built wild anticipation for their upcoming self-titled debut album. This first cut from that album has some moments of climbing emotion, but that's mostly from lead singer Ramesh Srivastava's clear and earnest vocals. There are dramatic moments ("every time I close my eyes I see you in front of me") held against meaner ones ("get your hands off me"), but in the end, it all comes together with slammed piano keys and the climactic repeated line, "Cheer me up."
