On Repeat: Archives (ex-Band of Horses): "Sleepdriving" [MP3]
Seattle-based Archives is a new band featuring four male vocalists, including Mat Brooke, co-founder of softcore cult-favorites Carissa's Wierd (not to mention an ex-member of Band of Horses). Brooke is likely noteworthy to the average reader for having contributed two songs and various guitar tracks to the Horses' acclaimed debut Everything All the Time, but his half of the Carissa's Wierd catalog is a more extensive document of his songwriting.
Put most simply, this music would evoke emotion in the crustiest of curmudgeons. While Archives is hardly a harsh change of direction for a Brooke-affiliated project, the potent dream-pop of "Sleepdriving" (just made available along with one other track on their MySpace page) boosts the volume, piles on copious layers of vocal harmonies, and builds to massive, upending crescendos. Too bad the radio's so crowded with assholes.
