New Music: YACHT: "See A Penny (Pick It Up)" [MP3]

YACHT, aka Jona Bechtolt, spends a lot of his time as one half of Portland's The Blow, but he hasn't ignored his own solo work. Typically built around glitchy, static-damaged instrumentals, YACHT's rock has always been more cerebral, and never nearly as fun as the Blow's shy, sly love songs. But Bechtolt seems to have realized the power a simple melody might have on his own work: The beat on "See a Penny (Pick It Up)" is easier to shift your weight to (though still too slow for dancing), and there's a single melodic hook, real verses, and power chords. It's less subtle, sure, but certainly more interesting. And of course, beyond the front-and-center details and the bubbling lead vocal lie secret sonic accoutrements-- like that weird babysynth that yelps throughout the entire song.
