Video: The Arcade Fire: "Take Away Show"
Last week's Take Away Show, of the National singing around a dinner table, felt like we were peeking at a private moment. The first Arcade Fire performance has the intimacy of that film-- the band plays inside a metal elevator. Then they hit street level, where they play "Wake Up" in the middle of a crowd of hundreds.
Arcade Fire have ended a few shows with in-crowd performances, but the first song, "Neon Bible" is fun to watch, if only to see how the whole band fit in one elevator. They save some space by eliminating percussion-- the band hit the elevator walls, and Richard Perry rips the pages out of a magazine to give the song a small, gentle beat.
