New Music: Hot Chip: "My Piano" [Stream]
On "My Piano", Hot Chip's latest single from their forthcoming DJ-Kicks mix, they split the difference between the stormy bangers and feathery ballads of last year's The Warning for a straightforward plow through affable electro-soul. To a degree, the song's directness could be chalked up to the context of the album it's taken from: The Warning, despite its itchy thump, was essentially a "listening" album, but DJ-Kicks is a dance floor series, and the rigid microhouse shuffle that powers this track makes for prime crossfading material.
Concisely clipped bars-- a buzzy melody, squiggly synth-horns, and flighty wisps of, yup, piano-- cleanly pass the baton toward the finish line as Alexis Taylor makes with his usual doe-eyed pillow talk. If it isn't exactly a revelation, new Hot Chip is new Hot Chip: "My Piano" is still just a hairbrush and a full-length mirror away from a bitchin' Sunday night.
