New Music: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings: "I'm Not Gonna Cry" [Stream]

Oh, Sharon, you make it sound like 1973 never should have ended. The latest from her and the Dap-Kings-- whose Daptone Records recently signed to the World's Fair label group-- is hot and nasty funk that jumps back in time to stab you with razor-sharp, on-the-one horn interjections and ultra-thick groove. The heavy baritone sax that anchors the horn arrangement gives it a bit of an Afrobeat flavor, while the warped alto solos inject a squealing dose of free jazz. That in-the-pocket drumming and burbling guitar are the kind of ear candy that goes straight to your hips, and it just might make your backbone slip, too. Jones herself does nothing more than lay down a scorching soul vocal that manages to mix anguish and confidence in an improbably perfect balance. As throwbacks go, this is as real as it gets.

[from the "I'm Not Gonna Cry" b/w "Money Don't Make the Man" 7"; out now on Daptone]
