Video: Dan Deacon: "The Crystal Cat"
Baltimore's oddball electronic-popster Dan Deacon just released one of the year's best albums, Spiderman of the Rings. But he built up much of his early following with a reputation for live shows that are as fun as third-grade birthday parties. Directed by fellow Wham City collective member Jimmy Joe Roche, the video for Deacon's "The Crystal Cat" mixes the sublime weirdness of the record and the dorky, giddy weirdness of the live show, and then throws in some flat-out weird weirdness. This is awesome. Studio and live footage of Deacon in sweats, a bright yellow hat, and his signature goofy glasses gets interspersed alongside (and sometimes beneath) Roche's crazy visual effects, which involve psychedelic patterns and plenty of dudes with mustaches. And now I finally know what a crystal cat looks like.
