New Music: Figurines: "Hey Girl" [Stream]
Danish rockers Figurines keep the hooks of last year's Skeleton but shake up some of their 1990s-style indie tics on new song "Hey Girl". The first single from the inordinately catchy indie-poppers' forthcoming album, the track reaches back a bit more to the 60s, with girl-group snares, a slinky surf-rock lick, and wavy garage-psych strums. It's a little different than the Built to Spill- and Modest Mouse-like nervousness of previous album highlights like "The Wonder", but once again Figurines don't skimp on hummable melodies and off-kilter changes. "C'mon, c'mon," sings lead Figurine Christian Hjelm as the song reaches its anthemic coda. Speaking about the album with Pitchfork's Matthew Solarski last year, Hjelm said, "I just think it's going to be more, like, psychedelic pop." He wasn't lying. (Thanks to reader Martin Hjorth for the tip.)
