Video: Human Giant / Ted Leo / Mastodon: 24-Hour MTV Marathon / "Me and Mia" / "Sleeping Giant"
When we told you that the guys from Human Giant would take over MTV and MTV2 to host 24 straight hours of programming of their own design-- from archival MTV shows to musical performances to each episode of their own young show on the network-- we mistakenly called the event "a telethon in support of nothing." In fact, the one million hits they need to get on their website in that 24 hours will determine whether or not they have a second season on MTV.
To make matters more complicated, those 24 hours started as of noon today. So far, the programming has been stellar, including musical performances by Ted Leo (who briefly lost power from his amp during a performance of "Me and Mia" and ad-libbed about Human Giant and possibly getting dropped from his label before the power returned) and Mastodon (who played "Sleeping Giant", appropriately enough), both of which are featured on an MTV.com player here.
The player also includes: a playlist of some of Human Giant's favorite videos (by Hot Chip, the Smiths, Pixies, Pavement, Ying Yang Twins, Aerosmith, White Zombie, Britney Spears, and more), clips of Human Giant sketches, and a bit introducing the whole event in which an MTV executive explains that he has to bump "Human Giant" from the schedule in favor of shows with names like "Pregnant'd" and "Latino My Face".
There's still plenty of worthwhile content to come, including appearances by tons of comedians and performances by Tapes 'n Tapes, the National, Andrew W.K., the Walkmen, Tegan and Sara, and, yes, Morningwood.
The takeover only lasts until noon tomorrow, so make sure to check out the player and go to Human Giant's website a million times so they have a chance to do this again when they're trying to wrangle a third season from MTV.
