Video: Blonde Redhead: "Top Ranking"

Strike a pose: Doe-eyed brunette comedienne Miranda July pantomimes her way through one of the less-memorable tracks from Blonde Redhead's recent 23-- the strictly-rootless "Top Ranking"-- using only a green turtleneck, blue jeans, what appears to be a carnation in her hair, and assorted arrangements of appendages and such.

That's one pose per second of the song, as the initial title card makes clear, but what's likely more interesting than July's anatomical choices is the unique visual effect director Mike Mills achieves here. The strict one-per-second rhythm of the images gives the impression of a slideshow of stills, such that when July's limbs shudder ever so slightly, it's jarring-- a bit like watching a 3-D movie or a hologram. No word yet whether drugs and/or an actual full television screen enhance or diminish this illusion.
