On Repeat: Arthur & Yu: "Come to View (A Song for Neil Young)" [MP3]

If "Come to View (A Song for Neil Young)" is a protest song, it's killing 'em pretty damn softly. Seattle dream-pop and soft-psych duo Arthur & Yu, aka Grant Olsen and former Rogue Wave bassist Sonya Westcott, are the first group signed to Hardly Art, the new label started by Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman. This track comes from debut album In Camera and it's a promising start, passing flower-kiddie folk through the light, natural distorting effect you might get from a musty speaker.

The title isn't just a nod to Bob Dylan's "Song for Woodie Guthrie", but also David Bowie's "Song for Bob Dylan". Accordingly, Arthur & Yu's hazy melange of acoustic guitars, tambourine, and reverberating vocals manages to bridge the great 1960s divide between psychedelicized California sunshine and the speed-comedown New York detachment of mellower Velvet Underground. The words come second to aesthetic, however, in a way an old protest song's probably wouldn't have. Let's impeach the president for sighing.
