New Music: Taken By Trees: "Tell Me" (new project from former Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman) [stream]
After breaking away from Swedish indie-poppers the Concretes, singer Victoria Bergsman would be forgiven if she spent the rest of the year traipsing around the world with Peter Bjorn & John. Anybody see her on Leno last week? The demo tracks available from Bergman's solo project, Taken By Trees, have our giddy-meters chirping ahead of new album Open Field, which arrives (outside the U.S.) June 18 on Rough Trade.
Produced by PB&J's Bjorn Yittling, Taken By Trees' "Tell Me" is misty-eyed chamber-pop somewhere between Nick Drake, Velvet Underground-era Nico, and Phil Spector. A spare acoustic guitar opening is joined by Bergsman's eternally weary voice-- and the rumble of timpani. "I don't want to be standing alone without a hand to hold," Bergsman sings. OK, we still care about "Young Folks", but June won't get here soon enough.
