New Music: ToTom: "Hunting for Witches in My Place" (Bloc Party vs. Coldplay)

Bloc Party's post-punk jitters once got them tagged "the next Franz Ferdinand," but the Kele Okereke-led British rock group always had more in common with the The Bends school of stately, anthemic rock. So it shouldn't raise any eyebrows that they might have something in common with the band that basically brought The Bends back, in world-conquering soft-rock form. What is surprising about mash-up artist ToTom's pairing of Bloc Party's frenetic "Hunting for Witches" with Coldplay's stately "In My Place" is just how well the two songs mesh. Okereke's slowed-down vocal melody glides effortlessly over Coldplay's chiming guitars and hi-hat-laden percussion. The more conservative setting also gives Okereke's sardonic political lyrics extra bite. Take this, Tony Blair.
