Video: Macromantics: "Apple Crumble"

In the coolest use of puppets since Deborah Harry performed "One Way or Another" on "The Muppet Show", Romy Hoffman teams up with a gaggle of "Sifl and Olly"-like sock puppets, who dance, sing back-up, act out song lyrics, and function as a Greek chorus with thought-bubble lines such as "We must seek vengeance" and "I want her head on a platter!" Eye patch-wearing doll heads, plastic skulls, and a pink guitar also punctuate some of the scenes. Hoffman, who got her start as the guitarist for Ben Lee's band Noise Addict, ably uses her sassy Aussie accent to handle tongue-twisting rhymes that sound like witches' spells littered with pop culture references (Corey Haim, "The Simpsons", Bowling for Columbine). But despite the childlike whimsy and percolating keyboard lines straight out of Tom Tom Club's "Wordy Rappinghood", the song appears to be about a Loreena Bobbitt-esque murderess who gets away with it. One way or another, indeed.
