Video: Bright Eyes and Lou Reed: "I'm Waiting for the Man" (live)

There are surprise guests, and there are surprise guests. With the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist, many of Lou Reed's best records have maintained a cool New York detachment. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, meanwhile, first made a name for himself with emotional histrionics for which the Midwest really can't be blamed, plus songwriting chops too many were quick to underrate.

The unlikely duo can be seen here playing VU classic "I'm Waiting for the Man" (Pitchfork's #27 song of the 1960s) during a recent show at New York's Town Hall. The event was one of several concerts at the venue lately where different musicians have shown up as surprise guests, including Ben Gibbard, Jenny Lewis, Norah Jones, and Steve Earle. The video quality is shaky, but when else are you going to see these two in one place again? Reed was also on stage for a performance of solo gem "Dirty Blvd.", from 1988's New York. (Thanks to Matt for the tip!)
