"Overpowered"

Video: Róisín Murphy: "Overpowered"

The video for ex-Moloko singer Róisín Murphy's new single, "Overpowered", is most effective for what it doesn't show. As a simple sawtooth synth squiggles over decadently decaying disco beats, Murphy begins the video the way she ends it: alone. In between, the Irish-born singer receives an audience's rapturous applause, picks up flowers in her dressing room, strolls through dark alleys, crashes onto a double-decker bus next to a blotto business-type, grabs some fast food, watches hooligans run from the police, brushes her teeth, and finally goes to bed. But all the while, as Murphy's Ruby Blue producer Matthew Herbert might note, something isn't right. The clue is in the song's simple refrain: "When I think that I'm over you/ I'm overpowered." Maybe that's why she forgets to change out of her eye-catching chess-board dress. Unless she's just trying to get sued.
