New Music: Hallelujah the Hills: "Hallelujah the Hills" / "Effie's on the Other Side" [MP3, Stream]
You don't need me to tell you that Hallelujah the Hills hail from Boston. Their eponymous song, from their debut Collective Psychosis Begone, heralds as much from its first cello notes to its final blasts of guitars. Their brand of buzz-pop recalls 1980s college rock staples like Dinosaur Jr. and Wall of Voodoo (who are from L.A., but still...), and Ryan Walsh's fuzzed-out vocals match the band's manic delivery as he sings about the death of the novel and turns "meta meta meta meta" into a MFA-style hook. By the time he realizes that everyone else will die in the sovereign nation of Vermont, Hallelujah the Hills have performed a strange sleight of hand, turning the song into a shout-along with an intensity and a Celtic-tinged melody that suggest an indier Dropkick Murphys.
BONUS: Another slice of Hallelujah the Hills is also below, "Effie's on the Other Side".
