"Tbtf" [MP3]

New Music: Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene): "Tbtf" [MP3]

Unless Broken Social Scene-ster Kevin Drew is giving a friendly shout-out to the Tampa Bay Technology Forum, new song "Tbtf" is probably about, as its chorus quietly suggests, someone who is "too beautiful to fuck". Yeah, we know! After the expansive squalls of 2005's Broken Social Scene, the clean acoustic guitar, lightly sprinkled piano, and whisper-along melody of this advance track from Drew's upcoming "Broken Social Scene Presents..." LP, Spirit If..., at first seem surprisingly unfucked-with. Feist isn't the only Broken Social Scene member who can make softer pop for the coffeehouse set.

It isn't clear whether Drew is pining for some unattainable goddess or letting an angelic groupie down easy-- a jarring snippet of heavy breathing and glasses breaking midway through suggests he certainly might want to, uh, you know. The lush bells and woodwind sounds you might expect from Broken Social Scene take over from there, keeping darker urges at bay. Meanwhile, it could just be the Smashing Pumpkins reunion tour in the air, but something about the theme, laid-back pacing, and hushed vocal on "Tbtf" evokes Billy Corgan's own "Perfect", from 1998's underrated Adore.
