Pinback are with the angels now. Sort of. Three years after Touch and Go debut Summer in Abaddon, the opening track from this San Diego band's forthcoming album, Autumn of the Seraphs, suggests that heaven and hell are only a few months apart. "From Nothing to Nowhere" has more of the rhythmically taut indie rock that's been the group's calling card since before the turn of the millennium. Insistent guitar downstrums build tension that increases as shouty post-hardcore vocals turn into a sweetly sung chorus. "These shadows take care of us," Rob Crow repeats, suggesting a shift in biblical reference material doesn't mean Pinback have stopped gnashing their teeth. Sing with them, ye seraphim, when the album arrives this Sept. 11.
