New Music: Weedeater: "God Luck and Good Speed" [MP3/Stream]

If Dave "Dixie" Collins was singing about petunias and bunny rabbits, he'd still scare the cool out of you. The frontman of Wilmington, N.C.'s Weedeater, Dixie (as he's credited in liner notes) sounds like he spent his adolescence living off bowl rips, Maker's pulls, and shot-gunned chasers. No one's claiming he's done growing up yet: On "God Luck and Good Speed", the title cut from Weedeater's Southern Lord debut, he sings with a cemented youthful contempt, waylaying somebody's ill intents with a bark matched only by his Steve Albini-captured, double-head Sunn O))) throb and drummer Keko's man-(gled) cymbals. "Mankind is unkind, man," he snaps one bar after demanding "Long live dirtweed!" Remember how you love the melodic motion of OM being all in the bass, but you miss Matt Pike's warm, crackling guitar wrapping your ears like smoke (just not his solos)? Dirtweed is whatever: Long live Weedeater.
