Video: Shining: "Winterreise"
Make sure to catch the "Prologue" video before the main one, because the set-up trumps the punch. Narrator "Virtual Y3K" grouses that the new millenium is a dud. None of the sci-fi predictions of 2001, Blade Runner, or Solaris (the original) came true, and neither did the Y2K-bug chaos. Somewhere this segues into a demonstration of a 1991 virtual reality machine, the 1000CS. The 1000CS supports high-tech virtual reality games like "Grid Busters" and "Legend Quest", but the "Winterreise" video proper shows Y3K with helmet on watching a dazzling abstract light show that suggests nothing so much as a shoestring budget: chaotic patterns and lights wave around inside the Amiga helmet while Y3K weaves in his seat and waves at his ceiling fan. Meanwhile, these distractions brush off the instrumental's quick-cut segues and hair-band highs and grind it into something like Vangelis covering "YYZ". Maybe he didn't plug the helmet all the way in?
