Videos: Tobacco (of Black Moth Super Rainbow): "Hawker Boat" / "Hairy Candy"
The woozy psych-hop of Pennsylvania's Black Moth Super Rainbow resides in a half-remembered past, the fleeting moment that didn't quite take because you were tired or distracted or on something that makes you tired and distracted. Did it really happen? Was it all just a dream? Celebrating that feeling are two videos from BMSR member Tobacco, complete with ancient visuals rescued from TV oblivion by someone (or something) named Beta Carnage for a forthcoming DVD. In "Hawker Boat", ex-Fruit of the Loom grape Richard Simmons contorts his jaw into odd shapes for reasons unknown, his chilling visage intercut with aerobicizing angels dreaming of food and a young kid popping and locking. The "discarded memories" collage isn't far from videos assembled by the Books, though the feel is very different, a shade darker and more cynical, touched by an undercurrent of nausea.

Speaking of which, the aggressively, unquestionably not-safe-for-work "Hairy Candy" adds vintage adult film clips to the mix (no real nudity, but the faces and writhing bodies say it all), connecting 80s smut to that decade's fitness craze and throwing in some pro wrestling for good measure. These porous borders bring to mind sage words from David Berman of Silver Jews, a man who understands too well what can happen when one develops a habit of plopping oneself in front of the tube in an altered state: "Every single game was a blowout," he sang on "Buckingham Rabbit", "and the NASCAR blurred into porn."
