New Music: Holy Fuck: "Lovely Allen" [MP3/Stream]

Holy Fuck aren't as radical as their not-so-shocking band name or bio nods to Krautrock and Suicide might seem to suggest. That's OK, because the opening track from the Toronto instrumental band's current Holy Fuck EP, the follow-up to 2005's Holy Fuck, is catchy, straightforward indie rock. And it doesn't miss much by not having a vocalist to do the now-requisite Isaac Brock impressions.

At once elegant and spazzy, "Lovely Allen" centers on a repeated "Baba O'Riley" keyboard melody. The bass starts out metronomic but also invigorating-- hmm, The Motorik Diaries?-- and then distorted guitars come on like a brawnier New Pornographers. When Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett adds his violin to the mix, the track achieves that kind of miniature cinematic rush some bands have to swap interminable soft verses and loud choruses to achieve.
