Videos: The Flaming Lips: "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" / "The W.A.N.D." / "Race for the Prize"
After beholding Wayne Coyne and pals descend out of a UFO to take the stage, the Flaming Lips' hometown crowd probably shouldn't have been surprised by any of the other spectacles the band had in mind for this film-worthy set. Confetti guns, balloons, carnival lights, an army of Santa Clauses, ribbon-dancer mic, a mechanical dove-- over-the-top stunts that would humiliate (and break the bank of) most other bands. But for Oklahoma's favorite acid-soaked psych rockers, this is par for the course.
Warner Bros. has just issued the Lips' first live concert video, a documentation of a recent show at the Oklahoma City Zoo, featuring many of the songs from last year's At War With the Mystics, but also a number of older classics-- including, in these clips, Yoshimi's title track and the exuberant opener from The Soft Bulletin.
Watch for the fan in the nun costume singing along with Wayne's nun puppet in "Yoshimi". Pricelessly weird: The very definition of a Flaming Lips show.
