New Music: Castanets: "This Is the Early Game" [MP3/Stream]

Brooklyn's assortment of haunted folkies must be surprising to people who've never heard of Will Oldham (or even Jeffrey Lewis' "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror"). Earlier today, we shared with you Akron/Family's warm, woolly Love Is Simple song "Don't Be Afraid, You're Already Dead". Fellow Brooklynites Castanets-- who unfortunately have their own horror stories to tell about big-city crime-- log similarly woodsy timber on this unhurried cut from forthcoming album In the Vines.

"This Is the Early Game" has the earthy ache of steel guitar, honky-tonk piano, and steady, deliberate guitar strums. Frontman Ray Raposa's weary voice sings of shooting guns and troubled romance, with one Jack Daniel's-soused male backing vocal and a tender one from a female guest. "I close my eyes, and I see mountains/ With the longest of roads threading through their toes," they sing, as the track fades into lo-fi hiss.
