New Music: The Manhattan Love Suicides: "You'll Never Get That Guy" [MP3/Stream]
These nostalgic Brits take their name from an obscure Richard Kern film from the 1980s, though that's the least they owe the decade. Sporting an unequivocally MBV/JAMC-inspired sound, this four-piece imbues shoegaze with a touch of twee, compliments of lead singer Caroline McChrystal's bubblegum vocals. "You'll Never Get That Guy," from the band's new Kick it Back EP, taps those two touchstone bands at their purest and most direct. The wall of sound here isn't an impenetrable, intricate masterpiece a la Loveless, but rather a piercing veil of white noise that only partially distorts the innocent pop song beneath it. However, unlike a lot of McChrystal's cutesier melodies, these vocals don't sugarcoat the issue, in this case boy trouble. "No matter what you do/ You'll never get that guy" she coldly coos before conceding to a cheeky bassline that'd make Kim Deal proud. Hey, some friends tell it like it is.
