Video: Edwyn Collins: "You'll Never Know"

The tradition of music videos set in recording studios is a dubious one, its past checkered with images of headphone-clutching "We Are the World" superstar lame-os or, well, Mariah Carey (ft. Boyz II Men). True to iconic form, ex-Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins doesn't go down that clichéd route in this video for "You'll Never Know", the first single from the Edinburgh singer/songwriter's forthcoming Home Again solo record. Directed by Oliver Evans (Klaxons, Gossip), the video shows Collins in a studio, yes, but surrounded by cool toy dinosaurs and at least one Elvis figurine.

Messing with the soundboard causes animated snow to fall-- "I can hear the snowflakes falling," Collins croons over a vaguely jazzy, guitar-based arrangement. All we want for Christmas is that life-size Rick James poster. Spring eventually shows up, too: Flowers sprout, the birds frolic, and Collins finishes a laid-back little tune that reminds us to add one more dude to the list of singers Jens Lekman sounds like. Now to redeem the notion of videos set in music stores (don't click).
