"Party"

Video: El Perro del Mar: "Party"

El Perro del Mar's "Party" appeared on Pitchfork's original Infinite Mixtape way back in the halcyon days of 2006, but as lovely as it is, it's hardly a song you'd want to inhabit indefinitely. The unfortunate protagonist of this Emily de Groot-directed video lives out all the beautiful, agonizing misery of the track, which appears on last year's Pitchfork-recommended El Perro del Mar. A bookish young woman is left home from the party again, so she dreams up a modestly more exciting life for herself-- all set to Sarah Assbring's downcast be-bop-a-lulas.

As "Party" spins on the record player, the woman changes into a fancy green dress, and checks herself in the mirror (hey, nice pearls). For all the fineries of her aristocratic setting, something is obviously amiss when she sits down in a plus leather chair, sips a drink, and opens a red-bowed package opposite a figure we can't quite see. A pretty ballerina spins in a music box, and another girl returns home. We could tell you how it all turns out, but we wouldn't want to be a drag.
