New Music: Future of the Left: "adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood" [MP3/Stream]

Long before Nick Cave got the "No Pussy Blues", Andy "Falco" Falkous was taking us all straight "To Hell With Good Intentions" as frontman for late, great Welsh rockers Mclusky. Falkous and Mclusky drummer Jack Egglestone have returned as Future of the Left, alongside singer/bassist Kelson Mathias. On "adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood", the second single from the band's forthcoming Curses, Falkous assaults us again with the inflammable fuck-you aggression of Steve Albini's Big Black (or Cave's Grinderman sans the literary mien). As Wesley Willis might have said, it's a demon hellride.

The track opens innocently enough: Falkous and Mathias chant the phrase "roll on" in dueling baritones that could begin an old spiritual. Egglestone's drumstick taps quickly morph into a dinosaur stomp, and someone yowls like one of the Commodores hey-heying on "Brick House", just when the gristly guitar distortion bursts onto the scene. "I can't believe it, believe it myself/ What a guy," Future of the Left shout, partly in unison, as if they were demented Welsh cousins of the License to Ill-era Beastie Boys. It's all over too soon, and it's not quite as funny or endearing as Mclusky's best. But I'm not gonna try saying that to these dudes' faces.
