New Music: The Shins: "Little Boxes" ("Weeds" theme song cover)
Hey, we Netflixed that "Weeds" show once. It's about gardening, right? The Shins may actually be able to afford subscriptions to the premium channels, and they're now covering the Showtime series' theme song, originally written in 1962 by folkie Malvina Reynolds. As previously reported, they're not alone: Randy Newman's gruff piano version already ran, Man Man is getting in on the act, and a few of you lucky duckies may hear the words "little boxes made of ticky tacky" coming out of Linkin Park. The Shins' version, which also appears on the UK single for "Turn on Me", lets James Mercer's reedy voice slide around acoustic guitars, jangling electrics, and a couple of keyboard plinks. Little bands, on the Internet, and they're all playing the same song. (Via Stereogum)
