New Music: Sunset Rubdown: "Winged/Wicked Things" [MP3/Stream]

Spencer Krug has never been one to shy away from grandiosity. So the fact that new Sunset Rubdown track "Winged/Wicked Things" (previously performed in a Daytrotter session) opts for the Shakespearean pronunciation of "winged"-- rhymes with "wicked", sorta-- is pretty much the least grandiose thing about it. The multi-band Montreal indie rocker gave us Renaissance-fair gallop on the Pitchfork-premiered "Up On Your Leopard, Upon the End of Your Feral Days", the last track we shared from Sunset Rubdown's forthcoming Random Spirit Lover, so go figure. Regardless, "Winged/Wicked Things" is a messy, grandiose waltz about messy, grandiose love and how this romantic ideal can blind us in more ways than one. Krug rhymes Poseidon with "the tide in" and debates the Shroud of Turin over gnarled lead guitar work that can't quite evoke the chaos of which Krug sings, but gets pretty close. "And chaos is love, and they say love is blind/ So I say, oh I see now, it's just smoke," he concludes, repeating the final words as if to keep the confusion (and illusion) thick. Do you see?
