New Music: Camera Obscura: "Baby Don't Go (Sonny & Cher cover)" (Live on "Fair Game") [MP3/Stream]
First Sheena Easton, now Sonny & Cher. Camera Obscura treat their covers of soft-rockin' forgotten hits not as guilty pleasures, but as sources of warmth and comfort, like a mother's cookies-- always the best, even if imperfect (which they're uh not, Mom), because you grew up with them. The Glaswegian sextet lost a male vocalist before 2006's excellent Let's Get Out of This Country, and frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell's subdued presence would seem like a contrast to Cher's brash celebrity. Still, Cher was originally considered the shy one in her own combo, and Camera Obscura have been covering mid-1960s hit "Baby Don't Go" for a while now. Campbell & co. recently performed this giggling rendition for Public Radio International's "Fair Game" program. What's most striking is the ease with which the light strums and tambourine splashes make the cutesy song one you could almost mistake for a Camera Obscura original. The beat goes on, and such.
