New Music: The-Dream: "Falsetto" [Stream]
As a songwriter, Terius "The-Dream" Nash has a thing for vocal hooks that don't quite translate verbally. He's behind Rihanna's hiccuping "Umbrella"-ella-ella, ay-ay-ay, for instance. More recently, he wooed us with the smooth, R. Kelly-style r&b of "Shawty Is the Shit", aka "Shawty Is a Ten", which had a few catchy hiccups of its own. After safely drinking water from the wrong side of the glass, the Dream lives on with "Falsetto", in which Nash (oh yes) fakes a female orgasm. Knowing the guy's track record, we shouldn't be surprised he pulls it off. Over epic slow jam beats, Nash begins by recounting how the happy lady seduces him: "She put some moves on me/ I coulda sworn Shawty's a wrestler." Pretty soon he's got her "talking in a falsetto", which means it's about time for him to ooh, ahh, and, yes, ay-ay-ay for the hook. Then: Guitar solo! Like a rock star dude-- I mean "ella-ella."
