On Repeat: Black Kids: "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" [MP3/Stream]
Jacksonville, Fla., five-piece Black Kids aren't the type to go on YouTube offering instructional videos for their shit-hot dance moves, and it's hard to blame 'em. You practice for hours, pour out a lifetime of blood, sweat, and tears, and then one day there you are, impressing this awesome indie-pop girl with your Chris Brown-caliber (OK, Napoleon Dynamite-caliber) steps. You're both having fun-- so much fun, in fact, she wants you to reveal your tricks to her mook boyfriend. Well, what-the-fuck-ever.
"I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" (sometimes referred to as "I'm Not Gonna Teach You", but the band prefers the long title) describes, you guessed it, pretty much just such a situation. From Black Kids' MySpace and their Wizard of Ahhhs demo, this little juke joint grabs attention like a breakdancer at a wedding reception with its scraggly lo-fi guitar, peppy synths, and ebullient melodies. Reggie Youngblood's vocals put a lighthearted spin on the ol' Robert Smith/Conor Oberst quaver, while keyboardists Ali Youngblood and Dawn Watley cheer back Go! Team-style atop Kevin Snow's emphatic drums. The reverb here can get a bit cavernous, tending toward epic grandiosity over, say, the Boy Least Likely To's low-key charm. But we're not suggesting Black Kids should start biting anybody's moves.
