New Music: DJ Gorky of Bonde do RolĂȘ: "In-DEED Mix" [MP3]
DJ Gorky, of Brazilian party-starters Bonde do Rolê, has helped the group grab the ears of of listeners who don't speak Portuguese with his taste for baile funk and American hip-hop, among other genres. Last Friday he dropped a 37-minute mix for the XM Satellite Radio show "In-DEED".
Unsurprisingly, Gorky's mix is a high-energy set with little respect for genre boundaries, though it's heaviest on baile funk, noisy electro, hip-hop, and upbeat dance-pop. Gorky tends to loop brief vocal snippets rather than let full verses play out, but we're pretty sure we heard UK DJ/producer Sinden and countryman Count of Monte Cristal's "Beeper", Detroit dance-poppers Inner City's 1988 MTV hit "Good Life" (featuring Detroit techno progenitor Kevin Saunderson), German electro-house duo Digitalism's Cure-sampling "Digitalism in Cairo", Arctic Monkeys' "Teddy Picker", and, um, a mash-up between Miami Sound Machine's "Conga" and Klaxons' "Gravity's Rainbow". The words, whether Portuguese or English, do not get in the way.
