"Zombie"

Video: Nellie McKay: "Zombie"

After you're done watching, I dunno, Chicago dance-rappers Dude N Nem's "Watch My Feet", here's a dance you can actually do at home. Nellie McKay's Pitchfork-premiered "Zombie", from forthcoming album Obligatory Villagers, doesn't get all in your face with messages, like her witty "Mother of Pearl". Nope, it's just an innocent jazzy cabaret number with its own easy-to-learn choreography. Especially if you're the dudes tapping our phones.

The video for "Zombie" intersperses shots of a live performance with footage of various people around New York City following McKay's simple dance instruction: "Do the zombie." First you stick arms out straight in front of you, and then you act like a zombie. Not exactly "Chicken Noodle Soup". Though a bit long at more than six minutes, the video is a fun look at New Yorkers of all stripes acting goofy. And don't concern yourself with the song's possible subtext that maybe, just maybe, Americans have been acting like zombies for a few years now. That's just Pitchfork crazy talk.
