Video Premiere: Fiery Furnaces: "Ex-Guru" (Live at the Mercury Lounge)
Widow City, the new album from Fiery Furnaces, is due next week from Thrill Jockey. The band played a show at New York's Mercury Lounge last month to celebrate the imminent release of the album, Pitchfork was on hand to film it, and we're happy to be presenting clips from the show over the next few days here in Forkcast. Yesterday we began with Fiery Furnaces reaching into their back catalog for "Evergreen", from the band's self-titled EP. And now we move on to tunes from the new album, which comprised the bulk of their set that evening. "Ex-Guru" was the first Widow City track to circulate online. With its crunchy power chords, delicate electric piano, and Minimoog-like squelches, it's a good example of something Fiery Furnaces do very well: infuse undeniably strange songs with an odd, almost subliminal pop sensibility. More FF videos to come.
