"Run to Your Grave"

Video: The Mae Shi: "Run to Your Grave"

The Mae Shi's previous releases earned comparisons on this website to the Jesus Lizard and no wave. "Run to Your Grave", from the L.A. band's forthcoming HLLLYH, has a little of the spazziness of such former 5RC labelmates as Deerhoof, but with a jingle-like melody and yelpy, choral vocals, it's closer to the Polyphonic Spree or Matt and Kim. Except what the Mae Shi are being so upbeat about is, as the title suggests, the human mad dash to end up six feet under-- "'cause they're coming for your brain, but they will leave with your head."

Directed by the band, the video is as cheerful as the tune, if not the lyrics. Dudes in bright, solid-colored shirts keep changing up places onstage as if playing an over-caffeinated game of musical chairs, and eventually this whole grave sprint turns into a party with streamers. Members of HEALTH, 14 Year Old Girls, Holi Buffaglo, and DJ Kyle H. Mabson are also on hand. You can watch the whole thing in HD on Vimeo.
