"100 Days, 100 Nights"

Video: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings: "100 Days, 100 Nights"

You have to hand it to Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings-- they know what they like, and they arrange every aspect of their presentation to reinforce the central idea of the band. They release 7" 45s, their record covers look like the record covers of old, and their production channels the sound of late-1960s/early-70s r&b with uncanny accuracy. The video for "100 Days, 100 Nights", from their new record of the same name, further transports their aesthetic into the visual realm. Filmed with vintage television cameras (per the notes on YouTube, purchased on eBay for $50), everything about the video, from the low-contrast grain of the tape to the spare set that evokes the low-budget studios of the period, rings true. The appeal of the band, obviously, hinges on your appetite for brand-new vintage soul, and whether you think this kind of time-tripping can make for interesting art; given the success of the band, many are answering the latter question with a big "Yes."
